Dabei ist es der eigenen Gesundheit durchaus zuträglich, der inneren Wut auch mal freie Bahn zu lassen. Im Gegensatz dazu kann sich unterdrückte Wut negativ auf die psychische Gesundheit auswirken. Generell üben unterdrückte Gefühle große Macht auf unseren Körper aus. Wo kommt die Wut eigentlich her? Warum unterdrücken wir negative Gefühle? Und worin gipfelt ein ungesunder und unreflektierter Umgang mit unseren Emotionen?
wie Wut, Hass, Ärger, Zorn oder Aggression, gibt es seit Beginn der menschlichen Existenz. Diese entstehen in einem evolutionär alten Bereich unseres Gehirns, dem limbischen System. Das wiederum besitzt, ungefähr auf Schläfenhöhe, eine Ansammlung von Nervenzellkörpern – die Amygdala. Verknüpft mit der Großhirnrinde, ist die Amygdala verantwortlich für eine große Bandbreite an Emotionen. Sie gilt als Schaltzentrale für die Gefühle Angst und Wut und verarbeitet in deren Kontext Reizinformationen von Augen und Ohren. Passiert das oberhalb einer gewissen Reizschwelle, setzt sie die regulierend wirkende Großhirnrinde außer Kraft und sendet über den Hypothalamus Warnsignale an den gesamten Körper. Zwar schickt der Hypothalamus auch Warnsignale an die kontrollierende Großhirnrinde zurück, jedoch deutlich langsamer als das limbische System. So entsteht erstmal eine unkontrollierte Wut, bevor wir dann nach einiger Zeit wieder mehr an Kontrolle gewinnen und im Normalfall der Verstand wieder die Oberhand gewinnt.

Unser Gesicht wird zu einer Fratze – die Augenbrauen ziehen sich zusammen, die Augen kneifen, unser Unterkiefer schiebt sich nach vorne und wir zeigen unsere Zähne. Studien belegen, dass wir ärgerliche Gesichter schneller wahrnehmen als freundliche. Für unseren Körper ist das seine Art zu sagen: „Vorsicht, am besten gerade nicht nähern.“ Die Wut entsteht im Laufe des Lebenszyklus auf viele verschiedene Arten und Weisen. Während bei kleinen Kindern die Trotzphase ein wichtiger Baustein zur Entwicklung der eigenen Persönlichkeit darstellt, gibt es bei Erwachsenen verschiedene Auslöser, wie z. B. Ungerechtigkeit, Respektlosigkeit, Angriff auf die eigene Persönlichkeit, Ausnutzen, Enttäuschung, unangemessene Kritik, Verletzung des Selbstwertgefühles oder Überforderung und Belästigungen. In Kombination mit Rachegedanken ist Wut eine explosive Mischung, die in Aggression münden kann. Diese ist eine permanente Impulsivität, die sich im Affekt äußert. Sie gilt als psychische Schutzreaktion, die durch innere und äußere Bedingungen ausgelöst wird.

Aufgrund dieser gesellschaftlich negativ bewerteten Verhaltensweisen sind Menschen oft nur selten dazu bereit, zu ihrer Wut zu stehen oder darüber zu sprechen – wer wütend ist, hat sich nicht im Griff, so das gesellschaftliche Urteil. Dabei steht der Zorn in erster Linie für die Beseitigung eines Hindernisses, er lindert unsere Angst und setzt Energien frei. Somit bewirkt Wut, in kontrollierter Form, gar etwas Positives.
In jungen Jahren ist es essenziell, dass Eltern nicht nur die Gefühle ihrer Kinder zulassen, sondern auch gemeinsam mit ihnen erörtern, woher diese Emotionen kommen und was sie bewirken. Oft verlernt der Mensch genau in diesem Entwicklungsstadium, darüber zu sprechen. Auch unser Umfeld spielt in der Kindheit eine entscheidende Rolle und zeigt anhand von Reaktionen wie Schimpfen oder Maßregeln, dass es besser sein kann, Gefühle zu unterdrücken. Dies setzt sich im Bewusstsein fest. Erwachsene befürchten, für ihre negativen Gefühle als hysterisch, schwach oder unkontrolliert abgestempelt zu werden. Oder sie leiden, im Extremfall, an Traumata, ausgelöst durch persönliche Schicksalsschläge.
dass Gefühle keineswegs verschwunden sind, nur weil sie nicht offen gezeigt werden. Und, noch wichtiger: Gefühle zu unterdrücken kostet den Körper Energie. Therapeuten benutzen in diesem Zusammenhang gerne die Metapher, einen mit Luft gefüllten Ballon unter Wasser zu drücken. Es ist möglich, erfordert aber stetige Aufmerksamkeit und Anstrengung.
Natürlich kann man nicht jeder momentanen Laune ihren Lauf lassen, Gefühle ständig zu unterdrücken aber bedeutet, das Leben nicht in seiner vollen Intensität zu genießen. Das betrifft körperliche und psychische Bereiche des Lebens, auch erhebliche Einflüsse auf Partnerschaft und Sexualität sind nachgewiesen. Auf lange Sicht machen unterdrückte Gefühle tatsächlich krank: Das Immunsystem wird schwächer und wir werden anfälliger für Infekte. Darüber hinaus können unterdrückte Gefühle körperliche Stressreaktionen aller Art auslösen: erhöhter Bluthochdruck, Diabetes, Herzerkrankungen, Nierenschäden, Magenprobleme. Auf psychischer Ebene können Erkrankungen wie Depressionen, Angstzustände oder Suchterscheinungen daraus resultieren.
sollten wir lernen, mit unseren Gefühlen umzugehen – vor allem negative Emotionen zuzulassen. Es ist besser, die Energie für die Verarbeitung von Ursachen negativer Gefühle zu verwenden als für die Unterdrückung. Insbesondere für Wut und Zorn empfehlen Psychologen verschiedene Ansätze zur „Eigentherapie“, wie z. B. einen Spaziergang an der frischen Luft, die Ursachen und Auslöser unserer Wut aufzuschreiben und sich dadurch bewusst zu machen, sich in die Lage des Streitpartners zu versetzen oder klassisch einfach „eine Nacht drüber zu schlafen“.
